Indri Whisky launched in 2021 by the Piccadilly Distillery, is an important step for Indian Whisky.
The distillery set up in the late 1950s, started making whisky in 2009 using American barrels.
By 2018, they began making whisky in a way similar to Scotland.
Located near the Himalayan foothills, the name “Indri” comes from the Sanskrit word “Indriya,” which means senses.

Piccadilly is one of India’s biggest makers of malt spirits.
The distillery uses six copper pot stills, like those used in Scotland.
There are three wash stills (25,000 litres each) and three spirit stills (15,000 litres each).
Together, they make 12,000 litres of malt spirit daily, adding up to four million litres each year.
The wash stills are 9.7 meters tall and shaped like lamps, while the spirit stills are 5.7 meters tall and have onion-shaped tops to improve the quality of the spirit.
This process creates a smooth and refined drink.
Piccadilly ages its spirits in American oak barrels, which are carefully prepared, toasted, and maintained by skilled workers.
They follow a simple rule: 70% of the flavour comes from careful production using high-quality barley, while 30% comes from natural elements and expert craftsmanship.
The Indri Distillery is located near the Himalayan foothills in Haryana, India, and has been making single malt whisky since 2012.
It gets its name from the nearby city of Indri and the Sanskrit Word “Indriya,” which means the five senses.
The distillery is part of Piccadilly Distilleries, the largest independent malt spirit producer in Northern India, with the opening of Indri, it switched from making molasses-based spirits to malt whisky.
The distillery is led by Master Distiller Graeme Hamilton Bowie, who has 38 years of experience with Scotch whisky, and Master Blender Surinder Kumar, a famous name in Indian Whisky.
They use locally grown barley from Rajasthan, hand-harvested by family farmers who have been growing it for generations.
Indri has six traditional copper pot stills and its facility is for preparing and maintaining barrels.
The area’s hot summers and cold winters help the whisky age faster, giving it a rich flavour in a short time.
The distillery is also eco-friendly, using renewable energy from barley and rice chaff, recycling barley seeds, reusing waste as cattle feed, and avoiding chemicals or excessive water use.
Indri’s main whisky, called Trini, is aged in three types of barrels: ex-bourbon, French wine, and Pedro Ximénez casks.
This unique method has made Indri a well-known name in the whisky world.

Water:

Yeast:
Special yeast is used during fermentation to turn the barley’s sugars into liquor, adding rich flavours to the whisky.
Oak Casks:
The whisky is aged in three types of barrels – ex-bourbon, ex-wine, and PX sherry casks.
You’ll first notice hints of black tea and caramelized pineapple, along with a touch of oak.
The bourbon oak adds a sweet mix of vanilla and honey, while the European oak gives it a mild spicy flavour.
The aroma finishes with the sweetness of raisins and a touch of sherry.
